PAST EVENT - Saving Lives Motorcycle Rally

1st Annual “Saving Lives Motorcycle Rally” Promotes Rider/Driver Safety Police Escorted Ride Starts in Detroit; Culminates in Rally at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac on Aug. 1

The 1st Annual “Saving Lives Motorcycle Rally,” created to raise awareness about driver and rider traffic safety and to honor police motorcyclists and fallen bikers, will take place on Saturday. August 1. The rally begins at 10 am at Steve’s Soul Food (1440 Franklin St.) in downtown Detroit, proceeds North on Woodward and culminates with a rally to educate riders and drivers on traffic safety at the Crofoot Ballroom (1 S. Saginaw) in Pontiac.

As a result of many motorists' inattention to motorcycles, scores of police and civilians on motorcycles are seriously injured or killed each year in Michigan. According to the National Highway Traffic & Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists were about 35 times more likely (per vehicle mile travelled) than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle traffic crash and 8 times more likely to be injured. NHTSA’s most recent statistics (2007) reported 120 motorcycle fatalities in Michigan, an increase of 28% over the previous year.

The August 1st “Ringo Ride” (named in honor of fallen rider Rochelle “Small Fry” Ringo) also honors the memories of Al “Ratman” Anderson and all the bikers lost due to traffic accidents during the past year. This police-escorted ride leaves Detroit promptly at 11 a.m, traveling North on Woodward to Pontiac. All bikes, clubs and individuals are invited to ride free. Non-bikers and the general public are welcome to bring their cars and participate in the free rally at the Crofoot Ballroom.

Once at the Crofoot Ballroom, the rally will switch into high gear with speakers (including State Representative Tim Melton) addressing Motorcycle Safety, Driver and Rider Awareness, a Bike Blessing, memorial DVD presentation about the fallen bikers, and more. Additionally, there will be a custom bike display by SCM Customs, one of the Rally’s sponsors, and giveaways by Lucky Monkey Tattoo.
